Food For Thought

Food for Thought is a nutrition education programme developed to assist New Zealand primary school teachers in supporting their students to make healthier food and lifestyle choices.

The Food for Thought programme is available to all Primary Schools in New Zealand and specifically targeted to Year 5 and 6 students.

Food for Thought is absolutely free to participating schools and is unique in that it provides a nutritionist to deliver the programme.   It has been developed around the New Zealand Education Curriculum and incorporates two classroom sessions, an inquiry learning session at a local Four Square, New World or PAK'nSAVE supermarket, a sponsored healthy lunch, a free Food for Thought lunchbox and a take home fridge magnet for continued learning in the home.

With one third of New Zealand children currently overweight or obese, the need for Food for Thought is particularly relevant today. Food for Thought was created with the assistance of a nutritionist, several New Zealand registered teachers and Foodstuffs' support over an 18 month period from 2005-2006.

It is now being implemented in schools nationwide through the Food for Thought Trust, the two Foodstuffs Cooperatives and through a partnership with the Heart Foundation.
